For some, it’s just a metaphor
A point of no return
But often it reflects actions
Full of lessons we should learn

To keep us moving forward
Is one purpose it might serve
But when we choose to hurt others
That’s something they don’t deserve

Bridges have a purpose
A connection for two sides
That when it is no longer
It creates a great divide

Perhaps there will be healing
In rifts we might create
But it’s better to respect bridges
Lest we suffer true their fate

About the Poem The Bridges We Burn

The poem The Bridges We Burn is about the damage that is happening between families, within communities, and between countries around the world. Perhaps when aliens show up, we will see ourselves as one people, but for now, there is a distinct “Us” and “Them” scenario playing out at different levels. There is no civil discourse, It’s “I’m right” and “You should be destroyed”. Pick a news story, and pick a side, and the sentiment is the same.

You don’t even need to go that far. Maybe it’s the family member you don’t talk to anymore because they like whatever. Or the neighbors who used to barbeque together, that now vandalize each other’s political signs. I’ve been to Palestine and Israel, and to Northern and Southern Ireland; there’s hate on both sides that is generational, that doesn’t go away.

When we destroy bridges, it ultimately damages both sides. If we are lucky, we can rebuild them over time. And if we are smart, we can respect them from the start.

Poetry Books

Here are some of the books that are available from Robert Longley. I would recommend the Sacred Poem journals. Reading my earlier books (especially the ones for Military, Police and Firefighter’s families) cover to cover can be overwhelming. The poetry journals are designed to give you one poem per day while you journal about what might be going on in your life. There are specific journals for grief, success, and more.

Inspirational Poetry Products

While I do signed poetry prints that are 11×14, that isn’t the size or product that all people want. Some just want a sympathy card, others may want a large canvas print, or maybe a coffee cup. There are limits to what I can customize with the options available so some products just don’t work. Please just ignore them, I know that that format doesn’t work. If you are looking for something specific, or would like to make something specific just let me know. I’m open to just about anything.
