Stop long enough to enjoy it
And appreciate it true
The gift of today is given
Especially for you

How can this be possible
There’s so many of us here
Some lead a life that’s charmed
While others live in fear

Shouldn’t it all be equal
Or pretty close at least
Some will die of hunger
On the same day others feast

All of this is changeable
If all we choose to lift
And then we can say in unison
Each day is a gift

About the Poem Today is a Gift

Today is a Gift is an inspirational poem about having gratitude every day. It’s not just about good things existing, but it’s actually that the universe is working specifically for you. With 8 billion people on the planet that seems challenging. Clearly some people are benefiting more than others. If you step back, it’s not hard to see the polar opposites between the haves and the have nots. While we definitely have some responsibility to help our fellow man, that doesn’t mean we should simply give them things. This ultimately creates dependence and not independence. We have destroyed the fabric of communities in Africa and Central America by giving them things based on our sense of need.

We all have essentially the same basic needs. Clean water, access to food, shelter, sanitation, and safety. It’s surprising that we don’t even have this for people in our own country, not to mention other parts of the world. Still we tend to buy our distance from internal problems and focus our intentions on people half a world away. Creating this foundation is less of a social services initiative, and more of an infrastructure initiative. I’m often reminded of the work of Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats) who I met briefly when he was writing “Do They Know It’s Christmas in Africa”. The money that was raised from that largely went to creating reservoirs. Based on the timing, they actually filled 5 years ahead of schedule.

These types of initiatives might fall short on the immediate feel good scale, but they build a foundation for generations to come that will be better off. If you give people a solid foundation, they are more likely to build something that lasts. Do something today that makes a long term difference. At some point we will all be able to say – Today is a gift.

Inspirational Poetry Books

Here are some of the books that are available from Robert Longley. I would recommend the Sacred Poem journals. Reading my earlier books (especially the ones for Military, Police and Firefighter’s families) cover to cover can be overwhelming. The poetry journals are designed to give you one poem per day while you journal about what might be going on in your life. There are specific journals for grief, success, and more.

Inspirational Poetry Products

While I do signed poetry prints that are 11×14, that isn’t the size or product that all people want. Some just want a sympathy card, others may want a large canvas print, or maybe a coffee cup. There are limits to what I can customize with the options available so some products just don’t work. Please just ignore them, I know that that format doesn’t work. If you are looking for something specific, or would like to make something specific just let me know. I’m open to just about anything.
