Somewhere north of childhood
A soldier gets his start
Learns a code of honor
That fuels his beating heart

Somewhere south of valor
Is where heroes are made
Sacrificing everything
And there often are laid

So many nameless battles
And graves oft left unknown
Leaving but a wall of names
To children when they’re grown

Everyone should be remembered
By more than just a wall
When your children share your story
It gives pride to one and all

About the Poem Share Your Story

Sgt Bernard James Creed was KIA in Vietnam (17NOV65). Share your story was written for his family.  The following was provided by his son Col. Barry Creed.

SGT Bernard James Creed honorably served our nation as an infantryman in three wars; World War II, serving as a machine gunner with the 121st Infantry Regiment, participating in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe Campaigns; Korea, as a Mortar Platoon Sergeant with the 23d Infantry Regiment participating in the UN defensive, UN offensive, CCF Intervention, first UN Counteroffensive, CCF Spring Offensive, UN Summer-Fall Offensive and Second Korean Winter Campaign, and in Vietnam, as a Weapons Platoon Sergeant with Delta Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division.

Sergeant Bernard James Creed was a distinguished member of the “Greatest Generation”. Barely out of high school, Bodie Creed enlisted in the Army, just in time to fight the Axis in Europe. After World War II our Nation called upon him again where he served as an Infantryman in the Korean Conflict. SGT Creed honorably left the service in 1952 only to return in 1961 because being Infantryman was all he knew. In August of 1965, and having just turned 40, Sergeant Bernard “Bodie” Creed was off to war again, serving as a Weapons Platoon Sergeant with Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division.

Award for Heroism

Sergeant Creed was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor (2d Oak Leaf Cluster) for heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force on 17 November 1965 in the Republic of Vietnam. He was cited for valor for being instrumental in repelling numerous attacks of an estimated North Vietnamese battalion while engaged in close heavy fighting in the IA Drang Valley. Sergeant Creed repeatedly exposed himself to intense enemy fire until he was mortally wounded.

He died along with 155 troopers of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Calvary Regiment, 1st Calvary Division in the tall green grass of the IA Drang Valley in Landing Zone Albany. On December 8th 1965 Sergeant Creed’s body was returned to his family in Columbus, Georgia with his finally resting place in the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery with all of America’s heroes who gave their all for our country.

Inspirational Poetry Books

Here are some of the books that are available from Robert Longley. I would recommend the Sacred Poem journals. Reading my earlier books (especially the ones for Military, Police and Firefighter’s families) cover to cover can be overwhelming. The poetry journals are designed to give you one poem per day while you journal about what might be going on in your life. There are specific journals for grief, success, and more.

Inspirational Poetry Products

While I do signed poetry prints that are 11×14, that isn’t the size or product that all people want. Some just want a sympathy card, others may want a large canvas print, or maybe a coffee cup. There are limits to what I can customize with the options available so some products just don’t work. Please just ignore them, I know that that format doesn’t work. If you are looking for something specific, or would like to make something specific just let me know. I’m open to just about anything.
